So, it’s Holland V Spain in this years World Cup final.
I have to say, this has been the first world cup that I have found myself NOT cheering on the Dutch. As a kid, I was football daft and the first world cup that I truly remember, was Argentina 1978. Holland were terrific in that world cup and even although wee Archie Gemmill ripped them apart single handed, they deservedly reached the final only to be pipped at the post by the host nation in extra time.
I fell in love with their long shots and spectacular goals. If you can remember the 1978 world cup, I only need to mention one player and you will know what I mean – Arie Haan.
Now, I was very young when this was going on but, I always remembered his goal against Italy and against a then, rather young Dino Zoff. In my memory, Haan scored it from just inside his own half and way over at the technical area. It must have been 20 years later before I seen this goal again and wow, my memory of it was quite a bit out. Nevertheless, it was still a good 35 yard belter. If you haven’t seen it – check it out here:
So, that was the beginning of a soft spot for the Dutch in every major tournament they played in. As I got older, and heard more about the constant clashes of egos that always seemed to plague their preparation and finals’ squads, I “let it go” simply because they still had that flair and skill that I loved to watch so much – total football.
So what’s the difference this time round? Well, to be quite frank, open and honest – Robin Van Persie! Good gawd, I hate this boy.
I don’t actually have irrational hatred for anyone else I know of and im not a general “hater” in any other walks of my life but, this twat really grinds my gears. I’m not going into the why and how but, you can believe me – I’d love to see this plonker go home with nothing. (i should add, I’m not a Londoner and it has nothing to do with club sides)
So, only Spain can stop them this time round and I have decided….. I hope they do.
Not just because of my irrational loathing of brylcreem boy but, last August 2009, I was asked by an American to help with a prediction pool they had going on over there for English Champions, FA Cup winners and World Cup Champions. I gave my opinionated answer: Chelsea, Chelsea and Spain.
I am probably now wishing that I had actually said this to William Hill and put £100 on a treble but, hindsight isn’t something I let myself worry about too much these days. If wishes were horses, right? Oh well.
So, this time, It will be red instead of orange for me. Oh actually, that’s a good point – who wears what at the final? Who is the home team? OK, I have just checked it out and it appears that Holland are the home team so I’ll assume they will be in their orange and Spain will be wearing their navy blue. So I will rephrase: It will be Navy instead of orange for me this time around.
I’ve really enjoyed this years world cup. I found last years English premier league very boring, dull and predictable and don’t even get me started on the Scottish league.
I fear more of the same for the EPL next season and the SPL….. well, lets not even go there. So to say that I’m looking forward to the final is a wee bit of an understatement. So what’s the scores on the doors? Here it is.

Holland 1 - 2 Spain ![]()
Kuyt David Villa, Xavi
Van Bommel to be sent off and Van Persie to fall onto the corner flag which bizarrely ends in the flag going right up his nose and he misses the whole of next season and then I don’t have to see his smug, nancy boy face, next season either.
C’mon Spain!
